In a recent The Black Creators Club episode, hosts Akilah Ffriend and Ebone Chatman were joined by musician and songwriter Keithian to discuss his interests in music and developing his sound.
Keithian has written for multiple A-list artists including Rihanna and Chris Brown. His self-described “gumbo music” draws on Keithian’s eclectic sound while giving homage to his native Louisiana.
In addition to chatting about Keithian’s background and style of music, including the music video for his new single, “Communicate.”
Keithian also discussed the journey of an independent artist, particularly after his bout with an official label.
“I don’t think it is necessary to go through a label at all...because you build yourself as a label and as a brand”. He goes on to say, “being an artist means you need to know the art of marketing, the art of your brand, the art of building your fans because, quite frankly...there’s so many ways people can be a musician”.
Keithian later shares that it was his combined experiences as a former artist on a label as well as having to independently put out his own music that has made him the artist he is today.
If there is anything that proved Keithian’s artistic chops, it was through playing our version of Elle’s Song Association. We asked Keithian to answer our one-word question with a song that included said word and the result was melodic fun that rivaled an intimate listening party, to say the least.
